BORAMIE SAO
Boramie Sao is a self-taught Cambodian American artist from Long Beach, California, primarily working in oil. Sao made her way from Southern California to Portland, Oregon and spent nearly a decade there before moving to Taos, New Mexico in the fall of 2020. Her dedication to the exploration of self, identity, the human experience, and the nuances that follow, have influenced the evolution of her work since the very beginning of her art practice.
Before she settled in New Mexico, Boramie explored many facets of her creativity, working in photography, ceramics, and poetry, all of which contribute to how she creates and observes the world. Sao draws inspiration from everything around her including the natural environment and the people in her life. Her experiences are woven into the stories, titles, and paintings she creates. Sao’s abstract forms have been woven into the fabric of her identity — each piece symbolic of time, place, and experience; the meditative practice she has with painting has allowed her to fully engage with the multitudes of her identity and deepen her art practice. From as early as she can remember, Boramie’s work has been a reflection of her curiosity and desire to understand her surroundings through first-hand experiences and stories she’s collected over the years.
