EMELIE RICHARDSON + BORAMIE SAO
A NEW MEXICO ARTIST SHOWCASE: EMELIE RICHARDSON + BORAMIE SAO
-
August 3 – September 7, 2024
We’re open Thursday to Saturday from 12pm to 6pm or by appointment.
A spotlight on two of Folklore's favorite New Mexico based artists: Chimayo-based contemporary weaver, Emelie Richardson and Taos-based abstract painter, Boramie Sao.
New work by Emelie Richardson was conceived primarily for a solo show that debuted at Folklore in Santa Fe in June 2024 called Second Nature: A story about pattern seeking. An exploration of the instinctual and habitual nature of repetition and pattern. In these handwoven paintings, repetitive movements slowly translate into replicating line then form. Patterns repeat but are never identically reproduced, mimicking nature’s cyclical yet unpredictable behaviors. Through repetition there is a letting go, a getting lost, a meandering off path. Contours begin to blur; soft fascination prevails.
Emelie's weavings hang alongside a selection of paintings by Boramie Sao who recently exhibited the pieces in New Mexico's oldest dance hall as part of a show called Quietude: "Exploring psychic and physical landscapes, Sao paints abstract shapes and sparseness, and teases out meaning through her titles. To expose the rawness of her linen canvases, she keeps her oils ‘thin.’ This collection of works invite the contemplative pause, both in the artistic process and the mode of reception. Quietude is not a meek disposition: a whisper can counter noise and speak against the violence of silencing. Sao has inherited a history of oppressive silencing - Sao’s family fled Pol Pot’s Cambodia. One hears the command to listen in the title, Quietude. One also hears the desert, where without time and attention, we ‘scud across its surface.’ Quietude is an invitation to step into the depths." – Dennison Smith
Emelie Richardson’s handwoven works blur the boundaries of traditional craft and painting. In Emelie’s handwoven paintings, chance and improvisation have become integral elements to the laborious process of weaving, in which fluid line and form cannot be easily controlled. Allowing the materials to play a large role in informing the work, Emelie highlights spontaneous subtle shifts in surface texture and tonality. Emelie currently lives and works in Chimayo, New Mexico.
